VALLETTA, 15 April 2025 – At the start of the 2024/2025 academic year, the Permanent Representation of Malta to the Council of Europe invited students from the Institute for the Creative Arts at the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology (MCAST) to contribute to the Maltese Presidency by designing its official logo. This initiative sought to actively engage youth in a meaningful endeavour that fosters cultural expression, civic participation, and national representation.
The selected design, created by Shelley Borg, is characterised by a dynamic and forward-looking visual identity, drawing inspiration from significant elements of Malta’s cultural heritage, including the sun, the sea, and the traditional luzzu. Central to the design is a spiral motif reminiscent of those found in Malta’s megalithic temples, symbolising continuity, transformation, and the vital role of youth in shaping the future.
In their remarks, MCAST Deputy Principal Dr Mario Cardona and lecturer Mr Darren Duncan expressed their sincere gratitude to the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Tourism for entrusting this prestigious project to the Institute’s students. Dr Cardona emphasised the project’s educational significance and noted that it provided students the opportunity to transcend traditional learning and actively engage in a national effort of lasting value. He commended the 17 participating students and their mentors for their dedication and professionalism throughout the design process.
The Maltese Presidency of the Council of Europe in 2025 will encompass an extensive cultural programme, with a particular focus on Strasbourg, aimed at showcasing both national and international artistic excellence.
Mr Sean Buhagiar, the Artistic Director of the Presidency’s cultural programme, elaborated on the programme, titled ‘Wieħed, Wieħed. Waħda, Waħda.’ – aninvitation to delve into the essence of contemporary Malta, where historical depth and tradition harmoniously coexist with innovation and modernity. He underlined that culture lies at the heart of national identity and is a cornerstone for unity, dialogue, and mutual understanding.
The Cultural Programme will encompass a rich array of artistic expressions—ranging from music and dance to literature, gastronomy, and beyond—offering a vibrant celebration of Malta’s cultural identity.
