Maltese Presidency Launches Cultural Programme with Opening Ceremony in Strasbourg

The Maltese Presidency of the Council of Europe officially launched its cultural programme on 28 May 2025 with a vibrant Opening Ceremony held at the Palais Universitaire in Strasbourg. The event took place in one of the University of Strasbourg’s most iconic buildings, a landmark that houses the faculties of Arts, Theology, and History.

The evening offered a showcase of Malta’s cultural identity and was conceived by Sean Buhagiar, Artistic Director of the Presidency’s cultural programme. His vision brought together music, poetry, and theatre in a unique celebration that introduced the Strasbourg public to the richness of Maltese artistic talent.

Among the high-level guests attending were the Hon. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism, Dr Ian Borg.

The night began with a concert featuring Malta’s top musical artists. Ira Losco, performed alongside internationally acclaimed contralto singer-songwriter Claire Tonna and Mużika Mużika 2025 winner Jamie Cardona. Singing in Maltese, this trio was accompanied by the energetic Big Band Brothers, led by Daniel Cauchi. The opening ceremony was also the first experience abroad for Teatru Anon, who added a theatrical dimension to the programme with Daqsxejn ta’ Requiem għal-Leli – a poetic performance based on the work of Immanuel Mifsud and set to music by Kris Spiteri. Lasting nearly an hour, the piece blended poetry and theatre to striking effect, drawing the audience into its narrative with artistic innovation.

Open to the public and free of charge, this event attracted not only members of the Council of Europe and European institutions but also Strasbourg residents eager to experience a taste of Maltese creativity.

All performances were delivered in Maltese and subtitled in French, allowing audiences to connect with Malta’s linguistic heritage while ensuring accessibility for the local public. Following the show, a formal reception welcomed nearly 400 attendees.

This ceremony was the beginning of a six-month series of cultural activities that Malta will present in Strasbourg during its presidency until 14 November 2025.
