Malta’s National Theatre performs “Miti Miti” at the Théâtre National de Strasbourg as Part of Malta’s Cultural Programme for its Council of Europe Presidency

Théâtre National de Strasbourg (TNS), 14 September 2025 – Strasbourg’s prestigious Théâtre National de Strasbourg (TNS) opened its doors on Sunday to welcome Teatru Malta, Malta’s national theatre company, for a landmark international performance of Miti Miti — a vibrant, interactive production presented as part of Malta’s cultural programme for its Presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe.

Hosted in the Espace Gruber, this was the very first time Miti Miti was performed outside Malta. The production marked the culmination of a weekend celebrating Maltese literature, animation, and the arts in Strasbourg — placing theatre at the heart of a wider cultural exchange.

Created by award-winning Maltese author and playwright Saviour Pirotta, Miti Miti is inspired by The Orchard Book of First Greek Myths and reimagines classical mythology through an engaging and participatory lens. Children in the audience were invited to vote live for which myth would be performed — and chose the legend of Pegasus, a story rich with symbolism around independence, discovery, and the transformative power of imagination.

The production seamlessly blended storytelling, original music, and innovative design. It featured:

  • A script by Saviour Pirotta
  • Original music composed by Albert Garzia
  • Set design by Maltese visual artist James Dimech, constructed entirely from recycled materials
  • Direction and Co-creation by Sean Buhagiar, Artistic Director of Teatru Malta and Artistic Director  for Malta’s cultural programme during its Presidency

The performance captured the essence of Miti Miti — where the child is not only the spectator but the storyteller’s guide. Themes of fate, freedom, ambition, and courage emerged naturally through the playful structure of choice, giving young audiences agency in shaping the narrative.

Following the show, a dynamic post-show conversation moderated by Antonella Axisa brought together the creative team — Buhagiar, Pirotta, and Garzia — for an open dialogue with the audience about theatre-making, myth, and the role of storytelling in shaping identity and connection.

Originally premiered in Malta in 2024 in co-production with the ŻiguŻajg Festival, Miti Miti continues to evolve with each performance, adapting to the choices made by children and the spirit of its audience.

This cultural highlight aligns with Malta’s Presidency goals:

  • To foster bilingualism and multilingual engagement
  • To empower younger generations through arts participation
  • To promote sustainable, transnational creativity

Teatru Malta’s performance at the National Theatre of Strasbourg stands as a symbolic gesture of friendship, exchange, and shared European values — using myth to build bridges between islands, languages, and generations.
