Malta is honoured to assume the Presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe for the fourth time in its history. Our vision is rooted in the principles of equality, solidarity, and inclusion—strengthened through dialogue and mutual respect. It is a vision that seeks a better today and an even brighter tomorrow.
Our recent consecutive roles—as an elected member of the United Nations Security Council and as Chairperson of the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe—reflect Malta’s steadfast commitment to multilateralism and diplomacy. We are proud to carry this spirit forward in our Presidency.
We are committed to keeping Ukraine high on the agenda, and actively supporting efforts towards achieving a comprehensive, just and lasting peace.
This Presidency also holds special significance, coinciding with the 75th anniversary of the European Convention on Human Rights – a landmark instrument that stands as the cornerstone of human rights protection, democracy, and rule of law.
In these testing times, we must renew our collective commitment to uphold the Convention and safeguard the fundamental rights and freedoms it enshrines. Malta’s Presidency is firmly aligned with this mission.
At the heart is youth empowerment. In the face of increasing trends of democratic backsliding, Malta is determined to foster a more active, meaningful and engaged role for young people in democratic life, ensuring their voices are not only heard, but nurtured and acted upon.
Furthermore, Malta will prioritise equality and the fight against violence and discrimination, working towards inclusive and fair societies where diversity is not only cherished but celebrated.
The protection of children and their best interest will be high on the agenda, with particular attention paid to enhancing the fight against technologically facilitated child sexual abuse and exploitation.
Only by standing united in our diversity and reaffirming our shared values can we rise to the challenges of today’s geopolitical landscape and secure a future that is peaceful, prosperous, and democratic for all.
