ŻfinMalta Culminates Malta’s Cultural Programme with “Mortal Heroes”

Palais des Fêtes, 13 November – On the eve of the formal Presidency handover to the Republic of Moldova, ŻfinMalta, Malta’s National Dance Company, performed their acclaimed production Mortal Heroes, choreographed by Sita Ostheimer. The contemporary work explored themes of memory, resilience, and the enduring strength of the human spirit. Through fluid movement and emotive choreography, dancers offered an artistic meditation on the ways individuals and societies confront fragility and and renewal. The production captivated the audience with its interplay of light and atmospheric sound, creating an immersive experience that stood as a cultural signature of Malta’s artistic identity.

The ceremony was attended by over 400 guests, representatives of the Council of Europe, members of the diplomatic community, local authorities, and the Maltese community in Strasbourg, among others. Permanent Secretary of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Tourism, Mr Christopher Cutajar, and the Permanent Representative to the Council of Europe, Ambassador Francesca Camilleri Vettiger, addressed those present. In his remarks, Mr Cutajar reflected on the achievements of Malta’s Presidency, emphasising the importance of multilateral cooperation and culture in safeguarding Europe’s shared values.

The Presidency’s cultural programme was led by Artistic Director Mr Sean Buhagiar. At the end of the performance Mr Buhagiar delivered brief concluding remarks on stage, closing on a reflective note. After he left the stage, the Presidency anthem was played for the room.

Following the performance, the evening concluded with a reception where Maltese beverages and snacks were served. Guests were welcomed with a finale accompanied by jazz player Sandro Zerafa and his Paris-based Limestone quartet. Their energy brought a warm, celebratory close to Malta’s Presidency, offering a final moment of shared appreciation before the forthcoming handover.

The ceremony stood as both a culmination and a tribute – honouring Malta’s contributions over the past six months while looking forward to the continuation of Europe’s collective work under Moldova’s leadership.
